Pallet rack beams are the horizontal "shelves" of a warehouse racking system. They connect to vertical upright frames to support the weight of palletized goods. Choosing the right beam involves balancing weight capacity, the type of goods stored, and the physical connection style of your existing racking.
Types of Beams
Most warehouse systems use one of two primary beam profiles:
Step Beams: These feature a 1 5/8" "step" or ledge along the inner top edge. This ledge is designed to hold wire decking, pallet supports, or plywood inserts flush with the top of the beam.
Box Beams: These have a flat, four-sided rectangular shape with no inset step. They are often stronger than step beams of the same size but require "universal" or "drop-over" style decking because there is no ledge for accessories to sit in.
Structural Beams: Made from heavy-duty C-channel steel, these are bolted to uprights rather than snapped in. They are used for extremely heavy loads or in high-traffic environments where forklift impact is a risk.
Connection Styles
The "end plate" of the beam must match the "punch holes" on your upright frames.
Teardrop: The most universal style. It uses shaved rivets that slide into teardrop-shaped holes and lock by gravity.
Interlake: Similar to teardrop but with slightly different spacing or rivet shapes.
Keystone / Slotted: Uses rectangular or hex-shaped hooks.
These are brand-specific and usually not cross-compatible with teardrop systems.
