JBL makes great subs. Knock on this cabinet and knock on some "cheaper" brands. Solid walls and internal bracing with large feet that have rubber ends isolates the sub.
Use with any system... a receiver with a LFE output, any RCA outputs or for an older amp or receiver you can run the main speaker cables to the sub, which will pull out the low bass for the sub and the rest of the signal goes out of the sub to your main speakers. The mains will be able to play at extreme levels clearly since they will not have any low bass signal.
If you have a phone or device with a mini jack output (1/8") you can connect to the sub and test before you buy.
