These came out before portable calculators and they are pretty much a modern abacus. Instead of sliding wood beads on rows, you use the stencil and add by 1s, 10s, 100s and so on. It adds up continuously and shows the total. Then hit the button at the top to reset. These are used mainly for counting and each time you add a number its a loud click. So count by ones or in groups and no worries about losing your place as it keeps a running total. Not rocket science, its pretty basic but they sold a LOT to businesses for shipping and packing as well as sorting.
