GENERAL MANAGER
Position Overview
The General Manager oversees all areas of store operations and is responsible for his/her store’s success and
achievement of all stated revenue and financial goals. He/she must have a clear, “whole-brained” perspective
and understanding of our company vision and objectives and how each component of the business contributes
to our success. In collaboration with his/her General Area Director and VP of Stores, the General Manager is
responsible for developing a specific store plan, outlining “actionables” necessary to achieve those goals,
communicating the goals effectively to the staff, and following-up to ensure the objectives are met. The
General Manager must provide consistent leadership, a positive attitude and an unwavering commitment to
attention to detail and “everything matters.” With the Store Managers, he/she must effectively manage the
values and attitudes of the staff, embracing our Foundation Principles and our commitment to breathless
communication. This position is a full-time salaried exempt role and reports to the General Area Director. The
General Manager has several direct reports including Store Managers, Administrative Coordinator and
Inventory Coordinator. Responsibilities include:
LEADERSHIP

-Oversees all company initiatives and directives (sales, visual sales, training, logistics, staff development, etc.) ensuring successful execution.
-Is the steward of company culture, promoting and embracing our business practices and philosophies.
-Makes strategic and effective decisions in the best interest of our customers and our company, taking care to objectively process information.
-Possesses strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects at once.
-Leads by example and with grace of authority, embracing and adapting to change and maintaining respect, dignity and compassion at all times.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
-Collaborates with Store Managers to ensure the development of each employee, focusing on the employee’s needs, goals and aspirations, while keeping the store and company needs top of mind.
-Leads, coaches, trains and manages the values and attitudes of the staff. This is accomplished by managing behavior, actions and performance through proper communication and follow-up.
-Is responsible for recruiting, hiring, identifying and developing strong leaders and team members who will contribute to our company’s growth.
-Reviews on a daily basis all HR Smart applicants, leads all group interviews, and participates in all one-on-one interviews for full-time positions.
-Leads Foundation Days, POS Philosophy, and any training that communicates company philosophies.
-Ensures everyone on staff completes full Foundation Training and assists in determining the amount of additional formalized training needed.
-Conducts timely and objective performance reviews of direct reports. Participates in all full-time staff reviews, and part-time reviews, when appropriate.
-Takes corrective/disciplinary action when necessary, collaborating with the General Area Director and VP of Stores on the appropriate conversations, actions, follow-up and documentation.
The General Manager is also charged with the following responsibilities:
o Meets weekly with Store Managers to maintain high levels of open communication. These meetings will be in addition to necessary planning meetings.
o Makes certain the Store Managers have a clear understanding of their leadership roles within the store, ensuring that they are committed to their primary responsibility of managing the sales floor, in addition to their area-specific responsibilities.
o Works with the General Area Director on the master schedule and supports the Store Managers in creating daily schedules.
o Makes sure all store sales goals are understood by management team and the staff. This includes overall sales goals, elfa goals, Dollar per Customer Goals and any other seasonal sales goals.
o In collaboration with Store Managers, determines the staff’s salaries and hours of work, and adjusts both accordingly when needed. Is responsible for managing store payroll expense plan.
o Is responsible, together with the Store Manager – Visual Sales, for all visual aspects of the store, maintaining its clean, organized appearance and understanding its reflection of The Container Store brand. Ensures campaign set-up, merchandising, daily maintenance and merchandise processing are completely and correctly accomplished according to company direction.
o Together with the Store Manager – Sales, is ultimately responsible for ensuring staff has a consistent focus on providing Man in the Desert selling to every customer. Maintains daily focus on Service=Selling and helps lead the selling effort in the store.
o Partners with Store Manager – Training to evaluate effectiveness of scheduled training and identifies additional training needs of the staff.
o Works with the Administrative Coordinator to handle the multitude of administrative tasks that are necessary to keep the store functioning properly. Is current and knowledgeable of all store procedures.
o Works with the Inventory Coordinator to manage and orchestrate the entire store inventory efforts, ensuring accurate inventory. Monitors the flow and distribution of merchandise and supplies within the store.
o Stays current and evaluates all company and store-specific reporting and applies that knowledge to driving sales and affecting positive change in the store.
o Maintains a safe environment for employees and customers. Oversees the store injury and illness prevention program.
o Monitors and ensures the store is compliant in all legal matters and communicates any needs or concerns to the appropriate parties.
o Checks voicemail and email at least two times per day and ensures staff is also committed to timely communication.
o Is committed to working scheduled hours (minimum 45 hours per week) and has the flexibility to work additional hours based on changing business needs. Is able for overnight travel to regional meetings (approximately 3 times per year), yearly Staff Meetings, and possibly other travel as needed.
